Request a new or replacement bin, repair or removal
This service is for Sunderland residential properties only.
Each residential property can have:
- one green bin for general waste
- one blue bin for recycling
To receive a brown bin, you must have a Garden Waste subscription. You can find more information on our Garden waste page.
Some flats or shared homes of multiple occupancy (such as bed-sits) may use communal bins instead.
Please look after your bins and keep them stored safely.
Repair or replacement bins
If your bin is lost, stolen, or damaged, you can request a free repair or replacement.
To help protect the environment, we sometimes provide refurbished bins instead of brand‑new ones. We only replace a bin when it cannot be repaired.
Before we visit to repair or deliver your bin, you will receive a text message two days before to tell you the date we will arrive. We cannot change this date, and we cannot make more than one attempt to deliver because our team has limited daily slots.
If possible, please try to be at home, or if you cannot, make sure the bin is in a visible position and easy for us to reach.
If your home does not have a garden or yard, we will leave the bin by your back gate or yard area. We will add a sticker with your address, put a card through your letterbox, and take a photo as proof of delivery.
Once your bin has been delivered, you are responsible for keeping it safe. If it becomes lost or damaged again, you will need to submit another request.
Our online request system has now changed. Clicking the button below will take you to the council's 'My Account' sign‑in page. Please sign in or create an account using your email address.

Medical waste bin
If someone in your home receives medical care and produces extra household waste because of this, you may be able to get an additional bin for medical waste. An assessment will be carried out by one of our Waste Education Officers to determine if you are eligible for a medical waste bin.
A medical waste bin must only be used for medical waste, not for general rubbish.
It must not be used for:
- infectious medical waste
- sharps
- prescription‑only medicines
These items must be disposed of through your healthcare provider or a registered waste carrier. More information is available on the Health and medical waste page.

Additional bin capacity assessments
You can request an assessment for extra bin capacity if your household struggles to manage waste or recycling using your current bins.
- Large households with six or more permanent residents may request an assessment and this will be undertaken by one of our Waste Education Officers.
Before making an assessment request, your household must be making full use of all existing bins, as explained in the council's Service standards. This includes using your blue recycling bin correctly.

If you are moving into a new home
New tenants:
Moving in does not automatically entitle you to a new bin.
Empty properties:
We do not deliver bins to empty homes. Please wait until you have moved in before ordering.
Newly built homes:
Your developer should supply your initial general waste and recycling bins.
If they cannot, you can request bins from us online.
Existing homes:
If you move into an existing property, please use the bins already there.
If they are missing or damaged, you can request replacements.
Rented homes:
If you rent from a private landlord, housing association, or the council, your landlord must provide the waste and recycling bins. If your home is missing bins, please initially contact your landlord or housing provider to arrange this.

Paper recycling caddies are no longer needed
We are no longer supplying caddies with recycling bins to be used for paper. All of your paper recycling can now be placed in the main part of your blue recycling bin.
If you already have a caddy and no longer want to use it for your recyclable paper, you can repurpose it for other things - for example, storing gardening tools, cleaning products, or other household items.
