Extra care
Extra care housing is made up of self-contained homes which have additional support services to help residents live independently.
There are 12 Extra Care schemes available across the city, providing 848 apartments/bungalows for rent, sale, or shared ownership.
Extra care schemes offer secure, self-contained apartments designed primarily to meet the needs of people aged 55 or over who can live safely on their own with some care and support. People who live in extra care housing have their own self-contained apartment or bungalow, their own front door, and a legal right to occupy the property.
Unlike living in residential care homes, extra care tenants are not obliged as a rule to obtain their care services from a specific care provider. All extra care schemes have onsite care 24 hours per day, seven days per week.
Within each scheme, there is a community hub which includes a community restaurant, activity or multi-purpose room, hairdressing salon and communal lounge area. All are open to the wider local community.
The schemes offer a range of services and support which may include the following:
- Secure door entry
- CCTV
- Smoke detectors
- Communal areas
- Assisted bathing
- 1-1 support as needed
You can arrange this directly with a provider or ask us to arrange the support for you. If you ask us to arrange this support for you an assessment of your care and support needs will need to be completed to see if you meet the eligible criteria for this support.
