Donate your unwanted digital device

Have you got a digital device at home that you no longer use or want? Maybe in a drawer, on a shelf, or under your bed?

Dig it out and donate it at a drop-off point near you between August and October.

We'll collect all the donated devices from the drop-off points, recondition them and donate them to local people who don't have access to a digital device.

Before we donate them on, we'll make sure every device is data sanitised. This means all data, such as photos and files, will be deleted and removed from the devices.

What devices can I donate?

We'd love donations of: 

• Old mobile phones and smartphones
• Laptops
• Chromebooks
• Tablets
• Desktops and monitors
• Power cables and wires
• Keyboards and mice

No printers please.

What are the benefits of donating my device?

Currently, 6 million tonnes of e-waste is generated in the UK every year.

While such a massive number of devices go to waste, 1 in 3 people in Sunderland have never been online or lack basic digital skills. 

By donating your device, you are playing your part in reducing e-waste. Your device could also be used to help someone in Sunderland build their confidence with using digital devices and the internet.

Where and when can I donate my device?

Device Donation Hubs will be in all areas of the city, so there'll be one that is handy for you to get to.

Some hubs will offer drop-off points only, where others will offer the opportunity for you to talk to a tech expert if you have any queries about your device and donating it.

The only thing we will need from you when you drop you device off is your postcode and for you to complete a very short survey.

 Common Questions and Answers

Q: Do I need to do anything before donating the devices?

A: Yes, ensure that your devices can be successfully refurbished and redistributed, it's essential that passwords and user accounts are removed prior to the collection.  Watch how to remove your passwords, accounts and devices linked to the device.

Q:  Will our devices be wiped clean before being redistributed?

A:  When the equipment arrives at Born Good, all data bearing items ae recorded and given a unique Asset Number. Data bearing devices are erased using BLANCCO software to HMG5 Standard-Higher (certified) or physically destroyed.

Q:  Will the devices be reused?

A: Wherever possible, items will be re-homed.  Cleaned, upgraded, renewed and rehomed giving each device a new life, supporting the environment and digitally excluded households.

Q:  What happens when an item is recycled?

A: Any items that are beyond life are sustainably recycled, metals extracted and harmful components processed correctly.

Q:  Can you pick devices up from my home?

A: No, unfortunately not.  

Q:  What happens if I miss the opportunity to donate my digital devices?

A: The Donation Hub does have the right to reject your donation. Resources are time limited, therefore all donations must be received when Donation Hubs have the ability to accept devices.

Q:  Our devices don't work, can we still donate them?

A:  Yes.

Q:  Once my device has had the data sanitised, can I have it returned?

A: No, the device will either be reused, recycled or destroyed.
