Together for Children Adoption Service praised for Outstanding leadership
Together for Children's Adoption Service in Sunderland has received a 'Good' rating in its latest Ofsted inspection, with 'Outstanding' leadership and management.
The service is a voluntary adoption agency providing services on behalf of Sunderland City Council, and forms part of Regional Adoption Agency Adopt Coast to Coast, operating across the North of England.
The report from the inspection in March 2026, rates the agency as 'Good' for both the experiences and progress of service users and for safeguarding, noting that "children's safety is the paramount consideration pre and post adoption."
Inspectors found that adopters feel valued and well-supported, benefiting from tailored support both before and after adoption. They said: "Adopters are well supported. They are offered a buddy, who provides invaluable help and support as well as forging long-lasting friendships."
The Ofsted report also notes a monthly support group for adopters, and social workers were praised for their thorough assessments, strong relationships with families, and ability to match children effectively with adoptive parents.
The report highlights the agency's comprehensive therapeutic offer, including access to a consultant clinical psychologist to help families build stronger relationships and improve emotional wellbeing.
Leadership was singled out as a key strength, with senior leaders described as "dedicated and ambitious", driving continuous improvement and innovation across the service.
Sunderland City Council's Cabinet Member for Children's Services, Education and Social Mobility, Cllr Carol Giles, said: "We are proud that Ofsted has once again rated our adoption service as Good, and recognised the work that goes in to improving outcomes for children and families.
"We are committed to continuous improvement, listening to the experiences of children and families, and building on our strengths so that every child has the opportunity to grow up with the permanence and support they deserve."
Helen Monks, Director of Children's Social Care at Together for Children, said: "I am delighted to see leadership in the agency recognised as Outstanding. This reflects the dedication, skill and compassion of our staff, who work tirelessly to provide high-quality support to adopters and ensure children can thrive in safe, loving and stable homes."
The inspectorate noted that the agency is already taking steps to enhance its offer further, including improving life-story materials for children, and expanding training to better support adopters caring for older children and teenagers.
