Peer challenge review findings published and welcomed
Findings from the Local Government Association (LGA) Corporate Peer Challenge have been welcomed by the City Council.
Findings follow a four day peer visit in November last year by a team of seven that included the Leader of Bury Metropolitan Borough Council and the Chief Executive of Stoke-on-Trent City Council.
Their independent report highlights Sunderland's strong leadership, ambitious long-term vision and impressive record of delivering major regeneration. It also notes high-performing city services that have seen inspectors rate children's services as 'outstanding' and adult social care as 'good'.
There was praise for the council's role as a trusted regional partner, its strong organisational culture, and its success in attracting significant investment through projects such as Riverside Sunderland and the International Advanced Manufacturing Park (IAMP).
The report also makes six recommendations for further action on: transformation, strengthening communities, partnership working, workforce planning, management development and governance reform.
The council has published the peer challenge report at: Corporate Peer Challenge - Sunderland City Council It will publish a detailed action plan by April 2026, and a progress review is timetabled for later this year.
Leader of Sunderland City Council, Councillor Michael Mordey said: "We welcome the valuable insight the Corporate Peer Challenge has provided. We are proud of our strengths and fully committed to acting on the recommendations and ensuring that we continue to deliver and listen to everyone across our city.
"I want to pay tribute to the commitment and professionalism of council colleagues and elected members, whose dedication to delivering excellent services shines through in the report. It means a great deal that this feedback comes from peers within the local government family, people who understand first-hand the sheer breadth and complexity of the work we lead every day — from essential frontline services to the wide range of programmes that support residents, communities and businesses across Sunderland.
"While the report highlights many strengths, we are clear that improvement is a continuous process. We value Corporate Peer Challenge as an important part of that process, and we are already preparing our action plan in response to the recommendations.
"We look forward to building on this momentum and to welcoming the Peer Team back in September as we move into the next stages of our improvement journey."
