Start Your Fitness Journey in 2026: Sign Up Now for Active Sunderland's BIG Events
The BIG 3K Run, BIG Walk and BIG Bike Ride are all back for 2026, and residents are being encouraged to sign up early. These events are open to everyone, no matter their fitness level.
Over 1,500 people took part in Active Sunderland's BIG Events last year and all events sold out, with hundreds of people of all ages and abilities crossing the finish line.
Whether you're just starting out, returning to exercise or looking for a new challenge, there's a BIG Event to help you take that first step.
The much‑loved BIG 3K Run returns on Sunday 17 May 2026, taking place alongside the Sunderland 10K and Half Marathon. It's ideal for beginners, families and anyone wanting a friendly, achievable challenge.
In the summer, the BIG Bike Ride is back on Sunday 12 July, offering routes of 5, 12, 20 or 38 miles. Starting from the Beacon of Light, riders can enjoy some of the city's most scenic cycling routes.
Later in the year, the BIG Walk returns on Sunday 27 September, starting and finishing at Herrington Country Park. Participants can choose from 3, 6, 9 or 13.5‑mile routes around the park and Penshaw Monument, making it suitable for all abilities.
Councillor Beth Jones, Cabinet Member for Communities, Culture and Tourism at Sunderland City Council, said: "The BIG Events are a brilliant way for people to get active, feel good and enjoy being part of something positive. Last year's turnout showed just how much residents value these opportunities, and we want even more people to join us in 2026."
"Being active has huge benefits for both physical and mental health, and these events are designed to make it easy, fun and accessible for everyone. I'd encourage people to sign up early, secure their place and start their fitness journey with us."
