Residents are reminded to check their bin collection dates and recycle right this Christmas
As the festive season approaches, Sunderland City Council is reminding residents to stay on top of their recycling and bin collections over Christmas.
Some bin collection dates will change during the Christmas and New Year period, so residents are encouraged to check the council's website for details of revised collection days. Residents can view their revised collection dates here: Christmas collections - Sunderland City Council
Alongside this, the council is sharing some key recycling tips to help households reduce waste and recycle safely this Christmas.
To help reduce waste and recycle safely:
- Rinse containers: Clean food and drink packaging before placing it in your blue bin.
- Keep cardboard dry: Wet or damp cardboard cannot be recycled. Do not put items inside plastic bags, as these cannot be recycled and will contaminate the contents.
- Never bin batteries or electricals: Batteries can spark fires when crushed in bin lorries. Take them to a recycling point instead.
It is also important to remember that batteries or electrical items containing batteries should never be put in any bin. When crushed in bin lorries, they can spark and cause dangerous fires.
For any extra recycling or household waste, residents can take items to the Household Waste and Recycling Centres at Pallion or Campground in Wrekenton. Anyone wanting to use these centres must remember to book an appointment before visiting.
Any residents with good quality unwanted items can donate to Revive Sunderland the re‑use charity shop based at Pallion HWRC. Residents can also find great last minute gifts and support a good cause.
Councillor Lindsey Leonard, Cabinet Member for Environment, Transport and Net Zero, said: "Christmas is a busy time for households, and we know it can generate a lot of extra waste. By following simple recycling tips and checking your bin collection dates, you can help us keep Sunderland safe, clean and sustainable over the festive period. Recycling properly not only protects the environment but also helps reduce the risk of fires caused by batteries and electrical items. I'd encourage everyone to do their bit this Christmas - whether that's rinsing containers, keeping cardboard dry, or donating unwanted items to Revive Sunderland."
