Decision notice of tree removal - Queen Alexandra Road, Barnes
Location of tree(s) to be removed
The decision has been made to remove one Ash tree (ref 1818) at Queen Alexandra Road, Barnes, Sunderland. Location - What Three Words (WSW): INTO.LEVELS.ASKS
Reason for removal
The tree is being removed due to tree roots causing significant damage to the footpath. There has been previous ramping to the footpath, but the roots have continued to damage the footpath making it no longer fit for pedestrians.
Further to the Public Consultation which closed on Mon 21 July 2025, the council has received two responses to the Public Notice.
The responses have been carefully reviewed and considered by the council. Concerns were raised about the historical significance of the tree and concerns for the visual character and heritage value of the tree. Also, the use of a tree spade was suggested, but this not a viable option at this location. The council's assessment confirms that the tree is causing a health and safety risk to users of the footpath.
Removal of the tree(s)
The tree will be removed within 2 years from 22 July 2025, but no sooner than 28 days from this date.
In line with our Tree Policy, a replacement tree will be planted in an appropriate location.
