Planned System Maintenance - Limited Service

Sunderland City Council will be carrying out planned system maintenance from 12 noon on Friday 5th June until 7am on Tuesday 9th June. During this period, we will only be able to respond to urgent enquiries. If your enquiry is not urgent, please contact us before or after these times when full services will be available. Illegal tobacco and tobacco products

Local intelligence shows us that several retailers and individuals in Sunderland are selling illegal tobacco.

How to spot illegal tobacco:

  • Non-plain packages - illegal tobacco products often don't have the standardised plain brown packaging required on compliant cigarettes to be supplied legally in the UK
  • Foreign language health warnings - illegal tobacco products often have the health warning in a foreign language
  • Lower prices compared to genuine/legal tobacco products - illegal tobacco products are often sold at a much lower price. A pack of 20 legal cigarettes is currently sold for approximately £12
