Raising the Red Ensign for Merchant Navy Day 2023

The Mayor of Sunderland Councillor Dorothy Trueman has raised The Red Ensign flag at City Hall today (Friday 1 September) and welcomed guests to the Mayor's Parlour for a celebration.

Sunderland City Council was one of many local authorities across the country invited to raise the flag in support of Merchant Navy Day, and this was the ninth consecutive year the Red Ensign has been raised in the city to mark the occasion.  

Merchant Navy Day was first held in 2000, with the 'Fly the Red Ensign' campaign launched in 2015 to remind people of its national significance and encourage their support. 

Mayor of Sunderland Cllr Trueman said: "As Mayor of Sunderland, I am honoured to represent the people of this city on Merchant Navy Day as we thank the Merchant Navy for their contribution to the country by raising the famous Red Ensign.

"Sunderland is a city by the sea with a rich maritime history and many people from Sunderland have served in the merchant marine, so our residents recognise and appreciate how the Merchant Navy contributes to all of our lives."

During the reception the Mayor welcomed guests to City Hall and Colonel Christopher Tearney, DL, ACF, Deputy Lieutenant for Tyne and Wear gave a speech about the importance of Merchant Navy Day.

Cllr John Price spoke on behalf of the Leader of Sunderland City Council, and Master of Trinity House Captain Stephen Healy also delivered a speech about the Merchant Navy. A minute's silence was held to reflect and remember those merchant seamen and women who have lost their lives.

The flag will fly at City Hall until Monday 4 September.
