Drivers urged to think about 'safer roads for all'

Organised by road safety charity BRAKE, the theme for this year's Road Safety Week (14-20 November) is 'safe roads for all', to highlight how we all have a responsibility for keeping our roads safe for everyone.

As part of the week-long campaign, Sunderland City Council has teamed up with the Police to raise awareness of inconsiderate parking at two Washington primary schools. On Wednesday 16 November, officers visited Oxclose Academy and John F Kennedy Primary School to speak to parents and carers about the importance of keeping the school entrance clear to make crossing the road easier and allow any emergency vehicles through.

With increased use of electric cars and e-scooters, which are often quieter, drivers are also being asked to take extra care and think of those who suffer from sight and hearing loss.

To help these road users, crossings and tactile paving are included on the city council's new highway schemes, and where possible are being added to existing streets. 

Most controlled crossing points include devices to assist people with sight loss so they can make a demand-based call to stop traffic cross safely.

Cllr Kevin Johnston, Sunderland City Council's Cabinet Member for Dynamic City, said: "Road Safety Week is all about drawing attention to issues around road safety and this year we really want to make drivers aware of vulnerable road users, including the children, the elderly, or those with sight and hearing loss.

"We are asking people to park responsibly around schools to help make our children's journey to school as safe as possible, and we want drivers to take care at pedestrian crossing points as not everyone can clearly see or hear cars approaching.

"While electric cars and e-scooters offer a more eco-friendly way to travel, we also want the users of these vehicles to be aware of pedestrians while travelling and ensure they only ride and park e-scooters in designated areas."
