Members of the Royal British Legion have made their annual visit to the Mayor's Parlour, in a civic tradition to launch the campaign and celebrate Sunderland City Council and the community's ongoing support.

This year, Mayor of Sunderland Councillor Alison Smith was joined by Chair of Royal British Legion (Sunderland) Vince Harris, and veterans to purchase the first poppy ahead of the launch on Monday 24 October.

The money raised from each poppy sold in the Sunderland goes directly towards helping all the veterans, servicemen and women, and their families living in the city.

Cllr Smith said: "Sunderland has a strong military heritage and as a city we are always keen to support our armed forces. The Poppy Appeal gives us the opportunity to pay tribute to those who have served and continue to do so.

"Each poppy goes towards helping people who have put their lives on the line for our country, so I encourage everyone to buy one for this fantastic cause and wear their poppy with pride."

Branch Chair (Sunderland) Royal British Legion, Vince Harris, added: "Our charity is very grateful for the people of Sunderland's continuing generosity and support.

"Poppy sales in the city are among the highest in the country and every penny donated goes towards helping those who have served or are currently serving in our armed forces and their families. I'd like to thank everyone who buys a poppy and shows their support."

The Royal British Legion is also looking to recruit volunteers ahead of the campaign.

Mr Harris added: "The Sunderland branch of the Royal British Legion is always looking for volunteers to help us during the Poppy Appeal, so if anyone with a bit of free time would like to help us please call 0191 567 0112 or 0785 552 2218 if you'd like more details on how to become involved."
