Family fun at Thompson Park
A free family fun event is taking place next week at Thompson Park, where visitors will have the chance to sample activities and try out the new 'Places to Ride' cycling facility.
Between 10am and 3pm on Monday 25 July, families can enjoy a lively start to the summer holidays with a programme of fun activities organised by Active Sunderland and its partners.
Local providers including Active Sunderland, Sunderland Young Peoples Bike Project, SARA, Active Travel, Everyone Active, Change for Life, Bowls Development Alliance, the Foundation of Light and local sports clubs will be providing sessions where children can take part in everything from cycling lessons, to bowling, to arts and crafts.
All activities are free to take part in and include something for the whole family to enjoy.
Anyone who comes along will also have the opportunity to try out the brand-new Places to Ride facility funded by British Cycling and the North Area Committee. The project, coordinated by Active Sunderland, provides opportunities to help residents be as active as they can be.
Places to Ride provides safe, traffic-free environments for cyclists of any ability to participate, train and have fun whilst riding a bike. The new facility in Thompson Park provides an area for people of all ages to improve their cycling skills in a safe purpose-built environment.
Councillor Linda Williams, Sunderland City Council's cabinet member for Vibrant City, said: "This fun and free event is a great way to kick start the summer holidays and is just one of the many activities lined up as park of the city council's Swim, Bike, Run programme.
"Swim, Bike, Run is all about creating opportunities for more and more people in Sunderland to take up swimming, cycling, and running on the back of some of the exciting sporting activities we've got lined up this summer.
"I really hope that the big, national events visiting Sunderland this year like the Tour of Britain and British Triathlon Super Series Grand Final will inspire people to get out, get active and have fun this summer."
Activities available on the day will include:
- Learn to ride cycling activities
- Bowling
- Change 4 Life team delivering traditional family games (including sack races and an egg and spoon race)
- Character-led story walks taking place at set times throughout the event
- Arts and crafts
Catering will also be available on the site.
