Cycling and walking to school

We encourage cycling and walking to school in a number of different ways.

Cycling or walking to school provides a healthy option for both children and parents, and also improves the environment if fewer journeys to school are made by car.

92 of Sunderland's schools have obtained the healthy schools status.

We are keen to promote the Child Pedestrian Training Programme which road safety officers provide as part of the school curriculum for years one and two at infant school age. It is a six-week programme which consists of both indoor and outdoor sessions concentrating on safe places to cross the road.

We are dedicated to providing , and are responsible for 98 sites across the city.

Cycling is encouraged and continual improvements to the network of cycleways throughout the city allows better access to schools. Cycling proficiency is provided free in schools. Find out further information on cycling proficiency.
