Single person discount
If you are 18 or over and live on your own, or if all other people you live with are under 18 or not counted for Council Tax, you may qualify for a 25% discount. You can find more information on the What is Council Tax? page.
You are not eligible for single person discount if, someone is leaving to work away from home for long periods of time.
If you think you are entitled to single person discount, you must fill in the Council Tax discount form and select Single person discount from the drop-down list. When we have received your application, we will contact you.
After you have applied, you must continue to pay the amount shown on your Council Tax bill until you hear from us.

You need to let us know immediately if you are 18 or over and no longer live on your own. If you don't inform us, you may receive a fine. If you no longer require this discount, please complete the Cancel a discount form.

Single person discount review
Over 52,100 households in Sunderland claim the 25% single person Council Tax discount, worth at least £305 a year per household. The council will review these claims using data matching technology to confirm people are genuinely living alone. If checks show another adult is living at the address or if residents don't respond to requests for further information in relation to their discount, the discount will be removed.
