Ryhope / Doxford Road Reclassification and Speed Limit Changes

Proposal

The final two sections of the Ryhope to Doxford Link Road (RDLR) are nearing completion, which will provide the necessary transport infrastructure to support the new communities and take pressure off the existing road network.
To enhance the quality of the environment by encouraging safe sustainable travel between communities, changes are required to the surrounding road network:

  • Lowering of some speed limits from 40mph to 30mph
  • Lowering of some speed limits from 60mph to 40mph
  • Changes to route numbers to encourage the use of appropriate routes

Road classification changes

The RDLR once complete will become the principal route between Doxford and Ryhope and adopt the following:

  • B1286 classification, providing a continual route between the A19 Herrington Interchange and A1018 Southern Radial Route, adjacent to St Benedict's Hospice
  • The current section of the B1286, which runs through Silksworth, past the Venerable Bede Academy, down Tunstall Bank and along Ryhope Street will be reclassified to a C road
  • This together with new direction signing will help to reduce traffic on this congested route

A section of Burdon Road will be classified as the C517 road and a section of Burdon Lane will now become an unclassified road as shown on the map.
