Holmeside bus priority and gyratory scheme

Proposed improvements Waterloo Street and Athenaeum Street to the south of the railway station will remain one way in an anti clockwise direction joining the gyratory
system at the junction of Athenaeum Street with Waterloo Place.

It is proposed to move the existing taxi rank from Athenaeum Street and Waterloo Street onto Brougham Street. This will align with the Sunderland Station redevelopment and place the taxi rank in a location that is easily accessible to customers exiting the new station.

The proposals will improve the public realm to the south and west of the new Sunderland Station which will create a more pedestrian focussed environment helping to link the station with the taxis ranks on Brougham Street, Blandford Street and the new multi storey car park that is proposed on Holmeside.

Improvements will include level paving throughout to match Market Square and the removal of unnecessary street clutter including the existing traffic signals at the junctions of Brougham Street, Waterloo Place and Athenaeum Street.

Waiting and loading restrictions throughout the scheme will be reviewed and rationalised with an emphasis on removing injudicious parking but also facilitating the loading of and access to premises that front onto the scheme.

A segregated cycle route will be provided from Green Terrace through to Maritime Street along Vine Place and Holmeside in an easterly direction to maintain sustainable transport links toward Sunderland Station.

Landscape improvements are proposed throughout the scheme, with tree planting incorporated where possible and the use of 'living' bus shelters which incorporate green roofs.

Overall the scheme will improve bus connectivity and journey times, provide improved pedestrian connectivity and public realm and it is hoped that congestion will reduce, air quality will improve and road safety will be improved.

Benefits

  • improved public transport infrastructure and connectivity
  • improvements to the public realm
  • landscape enhancements
  • improved accessibility for all highway users
  • encouraging the use of sustainable transport to reduce carbon emissions
  • improve pedestrian connectivity
  • improved air quality and road safety

Sunderland City Council is preparing proposals for a new westbound only bus priority route and gyratory scheme.

The aim of the project is to create a westbound only bus priority route along Holmeside through to Vine Place. This will be achieved by creating a gyratory system turning traffic from Holmeside onto Maritime Street and creating a new road link through the site of the former Peacock's store to Brougham Street. Maritime Street, Brougham Street and Waterloo Place will become one way to create the clockwise gyratory system, returning traffic to Holmeside in an easterly direction.

Timescales
To minimise disruption to residents, businesses and visitors, it is proposed that the works will be carried out in short sections.

Works are planned to start in Spring 2022 and are anticipated to be complete by Spring 2023

Thank you for taking the time to view the proposals.
