Sunderland Health and Wellbeing Board

Health and Wellbeing Boards are committees of local authorities set up by law.

The Sunderland Health and Wellbeing Board brings together key organisations in Sunderland to help improve people's health and wellbeing.

This includes:

  • Sunderland City Council
  • NHS partners
  • Wider partners including the voluntary and community sector

The Board's role is to lead health and wellbeing across Sunderland and its neighbourhoods, ensuring that partners work together to reduce unfair differences in health and make Sunderland a healthy place for everyone.

The Board produces and agrees the Sunderland Healthy City Plan 2020-2035. This is our shared vision for a Sunderland where everyone can live a healthy and happy life. The plan builds on the latest local information, evidence, and feedback from people and communities.

Our health is shaped by the world around us and there are certain building blocks that we all need to live well. These include, having a good education, a warm home, decent work, enough money to cover daily needs, and good relationships. Healthy City Plan priorities for 2026/27 aim to strengthen these building blocks.

The Board also leads important local work such as:

  • Joint Strategic Needs Assessment (JSNA) - current and future local health and wellbeing needs
  • Pharmaceutical Needs Assessment (PNA) - current and future need for pharmaceutical services
  • The Neighbourhood Health Plan - how partners work together locally
  • The Better Care Fund (BCF) - a pooled budget between the NHS and council
  • Encouraging joined up working between health, social care and wider services

In summary, the Health and Wellbeing Board helps local organisations to focus on the same goals, reduces unfair differences in health, and makes decisions that are shaped by local evidence and the voices of people in Sunderland.
