The families are encouraged to apply to have the names of their loved ones inscribed on the wall next to the war memorial on Burdon Road.

The memorial wall was built with funds raised by the Brothers in Arms organisation as a tribute to the community's fallen heroes. It is a permanent tribute to servicemen and women from the community who have died in conflict, training, special operations and non-conflict operations since the Second World War.

This includes the names of service personnel from Sunderland who have died in conflicts such as Aden, Korea, Northern Ireland, Afghanistan and Iraq.

Applications to have a name added in time for this year's Remembrance commemorations must be submitted by Friday 31 July.

Cllr Paul Donaghy is the city's Armed Forces Champion. He said: ""The Memorial Wall is one of Sunderland's most significant acts of remembrance, recognising those who lost their lives while serving their country since the Second World War.

"Sunderland has never forgotten those who made the ultimate sacrifice, and this memorial ensures their service and dedication will be remembered for generations. If your loved one is not yet commemorated, I would encourage you to get in touch and help us honour their memory."

The Memorial Wall was created following a public appeal launched by five bereaved families. Over two years, more than £150,000 was raised by the people of Sunderland to design and build the permanent memorial.

Residents wishing to apply to have a name added to the Memorial Wall should contact Mandy Howard in the Office of the Mayor on 07766 367 426 or email [email protected].
