Sunderland residents get more chances to get on their bikes this summer
Residents will have more opportunities to enjoy cycling this summer, thanks to a new programme of fully funded sessions launching across the city. Cycling is a simple way to get fit, feel good and travel sustainably, and the new support will help people build confidence and enjoy the long‑term health benefits of being active.
Using new funding from Sunderland City Council through Active Travel England's Consolidated Active Travel Fund 2026, Wear Wheels is launching a programme of fully funded cycling sessions across the city this May. This will give more residents the chance to enjoy the health and wellbeing benefits of cycling.
Run by Sunderland Community Action Group, Wear Wheels will deliver a programme of fully funded cycle maintenance sessions and led rides. The sessions are designed to help residents stay active, build confidence and enjoy safe, supported cycling across the city.
Launching in May and running through until August, residents will be able to join led bike rides from the St Peter's cycling hub. These two-hour sessions offer a safe, supportive and confidence building way to enjoy gentle exercise, meet others and explore Sunderland's cycling routes. Friendly instructors will guide each ride, helping participants develop skills and feel more comfortable on two wheels in a relaxed group setting.
Anyone can take part, even if they do not have their own bike. Wear Wheels will provide recycled bikes for those who need them, ensuring that cost or lack of equipment is never a barrier to getting active. The led rides are ideal for people who are new to cycling, returning after a break, or unsure about navigating routes independently.
Wear Wheels will also run free cycle maintenance sessions, giving residents the knowledge to keep their bikes safe and ready for the road. A well-maintained bike is easier and more enjoyable to ride and much safer, helping prevent breakdowns and boosting confidence on every journey.
The additional funding will also support the continuation of Wear Wheels' recycled bike scheme, which offers refurbished bicycles to residents who may not have access to their own. Bikes can be viewed in person at the Wear Wheels workshop, and consent from a responsible adult is required for anyone receiving a bike. This initiative supports affordable, active, and sustainable travel and helps more people experience the wellbeing benefits of regular cycling.
Peter McIntyre, Executive Director of Economy and Place at Sunderland City Council, said: "These new sessions will make a real difference for people across Sunderland. Whether someone is learning to ride, getting back on a bike after years away, or simply looking for a healthier way to travel, Wear Wheels is giving residents the support and confidence they need. It is fantastic to see a community led project helping more people feel safe, active, and connected as they explore our city on two wheels."
Richy Duggan, Project Manager at Sunderland Community Action Group, added: "This funding allows us to reach more people than ever before. Whether someone is completely new to cycling or looking to build their skills, these sessions offer a welcoming and supportive way to get involved. Every recycled bike and every ride help build stronger community connections."
The new programme complements Wear Wheels' ongoing work in cycle repair, recycling, and community engagement, further establishing the organisation as a key partner in Sunderland's active travel ambitions.
