Freedoms are traditionally given by Sunderland City Council to citizens who make 'significant contributions to the wellbeing and community spirit of Sunderland'.

Freedoms were conferred on Wednesday 11 March to Sister Mary Scholastica, who is renowned for her work supporting the community and seafarers at the Port of Sunderland, and businessman Paul Callaghan CBE DL FRSA for his many contributions to business, education and culture.

Both nominations also recognise their work as ambassadors for the city and as role models for young people.

Proposing the freedoms at the ceremony in Sunderland City Hall, Leader of the City Council Councillor Michael Mordey said: "Sister Mary embodies the very best of Sunderland - quiet strength, deep compassion, tireless service, and a commitment to community that spans more than six decades.

"It is only right that the city she has given so much to now honours her in return."

Proposing Mr Callaghan's freedom, Deputy Leader of Sunderland City Council, Councillor Kelly Chequer said: "Paul's contribution to the cultural and civic life of our city is extraordinary.

"His dedication to widening access to the arts, strengthening community engagement and transforming Sunderland's cultural identity has had a profound and lasting impact on residents young and old.

"Through the MAC Trust, Cultural Spring and the establishment of Sunderland Culture, Paul has played a central role in delivering tens of millions of pounds in cultural investment. These endeavours have brought world‑class programming to local communities and supported the development of creative talent across the city.

"The Fire Station - now a vibrant cultural landmark - is a powerful symbol of this work and of Paul's belief in culture as a driver of renewal and aspiration."

Other freedoms of Sunderland include footballing champions Jill Scott and Steph Houghton, and Gary Bennett.

In 2022, the Sunderland 1973 FA Cup Squad received the Freedom of the City for their ongoing achievement and contribution to the city's well-being.

Television reporter Kate Adie has also been granted Freedom of the City.

4 Regiment Royal Artillery - the 'North East gunners', 3 Rifles and the crew of HMS Ocean, which was Sunderland's adopted warship and the Royal Navy's largest ship for many years, have also received freedoms.
