Active Sunderland is bringing Beat the Street to Hendon and Grangetown for the first time this spring

Residents in Hendon and Grangetown are being invited to take part in Beat the Street - a fun, free game that encourages people of all ages to get active by walking, cycling, running, scooting or wheeling around their local area.

The game has been played by more than two million people in more than 170 places in the UK and beyond. Beat the Street is designed to get communities moving by helping people to make small changes, such as walking or cycling to school every day and ditching the car. By working in teams, those who move the most and travel the furthest can win prizes while being active and having fun.

It will soon be the turn of Hendon and Grangetown with the games taking place between Wednesday 18 March to Wednesday 29 April. Nearer to the game start, 20 special sensors called "Beat Boxes" will appear around the area.

Children who attend Grangetown Primary, Hudson Road Primary and Valley Road Academy will be given game cards and the wider community can collect a free card from the gift shop at Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens, Back on the Map and other venues listed on the Beat the Street website. In addition, players over the age of 13 can use the free Beat the Street app to play.

Once underway, players find their nearest Beat Box to start the journey. Walk, cycle or wheel to the next Beat Box within an hour to score 10 points. Then keep going!

Beat the Street Hendon & Grangetown is being delivered by Intelligent Health in partnership with Sunderland City Council's Active Sunderland. It is funded by Sunderland City Council and the National Lottery via Sport England.

Councillor Beth Jones, Portfolio Holder for Communities, Culture and Tourism at Sunderland City Council said: "We are so excited about the launch of the Beat the Street initiative which will have a real impact on our Active Sunderland strategy and creating new, different and fun opportunities for people to move more. Beat the Street will help people to incorporate activity into their everyday lives and be rewarded for it!

"Not only does the game help inspire people to get active, but will encourage people to explore areas on foot that they might not be familiar with, plus it helps with connecting the community, reduces congestion and the area's carbon footprint.  It's free to take part, so why not sign up and get involved - you could get fitter and win prizes!"
