Leader of Sunderland City Council, Councillor Michael Mordey said:

'It's incredible to be back in the Premier League.  I want to congratulate the whole team and backroom staff on this remarkable achievement.

'The passion of the team and the support from all across Wearside was phenomenal - it really made the difference.

'We're back where we belong after eight tumultuous years - I couldn't be prouder to lead a city that is transforming, that is going places and that is now in the Premier League.

'So many plaudits must to go Regis and the team, the board and backroom staff who have put the hard yards in - this is their moment, and we thank them for bringing a football feelgood factor back to Sunderland.'
