Ha'way the Lionesses
City landmarks are being lit to show support for the England women's football team.
The team is playing Germany in the UEFA Women's EURO 2022 final at Wembley on Sunday following Tuesday's victory over Sweden.
Landmarks are being lit in red and white to mark the national flag and the team's home and away kits. The Northern Spire bridge, Keel Square, Fulwell Mill, Seaburn Lighthouse, Hylton Castle and Penshaw Monument will be lit from dusk to dawn on both Saturday 30 and Sunday 31 July.
Leader of Sunderland City Council, Councillor Graeme Miller said: "The Lionesses have had a tremendous run of results in these championships, especially with the victory over Sweden who were ranked second."
Sunderland has strong connections to the squad as midfielder Jill Scott was born in the city, and defender Lucy Bronze and forward Beth Mead have both played for Sunderland AFC Ladies.
Cllr Miller added: "They're helping raise the profile of women's football, and are winning and gaining support and admiration from fans across the country and the world. And they're showing a great team spirit and scoring great goals too.
"They're unbeaten since last September and let's all wish them the very best for the final - Ha'way the Lionesses."
