About Area Committees
Find out more about Sunderland's Area Committees and their supporting Neighbourhood and Community Board, when they meet, the issues they are looking at.
There are five Area Committees in Sunderland comprised of all Elected Members from the area's wards. They work closely with council officers, service delivery partners and members from the area Voluntary, Community, and Social Enterprise Network (VCSE) to ensure strong and consistent links are made between local and city-wide priorities. The role of the Area Committee is to:
- Lead on the development, implementation, and effective delivery of an Area Plan, working closely with residents to ensure the plans include all main priorities for the Area, which enables residents to be more resilient. The Area Plans are linked to the City Plan and other significant strategies for the city.
- Actively encourage local residents to become involved in shaping the Area Plan, ensuring delivery of activities to support matters which affect them.
Each Area Committee is supported by a Neighbourhood and Community Board. The Board supports the delivery of the Area Committee's Neighbourhood Plan and key priorities for local action.
Coalfield Area Committee - comprising Penshaw, Shiney Row, Herrington, Newbottle, Houghton North, Houghton South, Hetton Downs and Hetton wards.
East Sunderland Area Committee - comprising Doxford, Hendon, Tunstall, Humbledon, Grangetown, Ryhope and Doxford Park wards.
North Sunderland Area Committee - comprising Fulwell, Roker, Southwick, Redhouse and Hylton Castle wards.
Washington Area Committee - comprising Washington Central, Washington East, Washington North, Washington South and Washington West wards.
West Sunderland Area Committee - comprising Pallion, Ford, Pennywell, South Hylton, Barnes, Thornhill, Grindon, Thorney Close, and Farringdon Silksworth wards.
