Care discounts
If you provide care for someone who lives with you or are a resident care worker, you may get a 25% discount off your bill.
Unpaid carer or caring for a relative
You will not count for Council Tax if you provide care or support for at least 35 hours a week to someone who lives with you.
The person you care for must not be:
- Your partner
- Your spouse; or
- Your child under 18 years of age
The person being cared for must normally get one of the following benefits:
- Armed Forces Independence Payment
- Attendance Allowance (AA)
- Disability Living Allowance (DLA) the highest or middle rate care component.
- Highest rate of Constant Attendance Allowance payable on top of full rate Disablement Benefit paid for an industrial injury
- Industrial Injuries or War pensions Schemes the increase in constant attendance allowance.
- Personal Independence Payment Daily Living Component at either standard or enhanced rate
To apply for this reduction, you must fill in the Council Tax discount form and select Care discount - Caring for someone who lives with you from the drop-down list. When we have received your application, we will contact you.
Care worker
You may also be entitled to a discount if you are:
- Engaged to provide care through a connection with the Local Authority, the Crown or a charity
- Engaged or employed as a care worker for at least 24 hours a week by the person who requires the care
- Paid no more than £44 per week
- Resident in the premises where the care is given, or in premises which have been provided for the better performance of the work

- Proof of employment
- Proof of wage

Under 25 and leaving care
Corporate parenting is a statutory function of Sunderland City Council. To help young care leavers with the challenges of living independently we will reduce their Council Tax.
As a corporate parent we will support each young person leaving care who moves into independent accommodation with a 100% reduction on their council tax bill. If you think you are entitled to care leaver discount, please must fill in the Council Tax discount form and select Care leaver discount from the drop-down list.
We will require a confirmation email from their Social Worker that they are leaving care to be able to provide a discount. This will need to be sent by;
