Direct Debit
Pay your Council Tax by Direct Debit, it's convenient, saves you time and is a trusted method of payment.
If you are new to the area or this is your first time paying council tax, please complete the Moving into Sunderland area form to register and set up your direct debit:
Choose your payment date from:
- Monthly - on 1st, 8th, 15th, 23rd or 28th of the month. You can also choose to pay over 10 months from April to January, or over 12 months from April to March
- Four weekly - every 4 weeks over 12 instalments from April to February, starting on any Monday
- Fortnightly - every fortnight over 26 instalments from April to March, starting on any Friday
- Weekly - any day of the week Monday to Friday over either 40 weeks to January or 52 weeks to March.
If you have recently received a final notice or summons, please call 0191 561 4388 to speak to a Council Tax recovery officer to make an arrangement to pay by direct debit.

Return your completed form by:
- Email - council.tax@sunderland.gov.uk or;
- Post to - Sunderland City Council, City Hall, Plater Way, Sunderland, SR1 3AA
Once we receive your completed Direct Debit mandate we will set up the instruction and send you confirmation of your instalments in the post at least 10 working days in advance of your account being debited.

The Direct Debit Guarantee
- This guarantee is offered by all banks and building societies that accept instructions to pay Direct Debits
- If there are any changes to the amount, date or frequency of your Direct Debit Sunderland City Council will notify you 10 working days in advance of your account being debited or as otherwise agreed. If you request Sunderland City Council to collect a payment, confirmation of the amount and date will be given to you at the time of the request
- If an error is made in the payment of your Direct Debit, by Sunderland City Council or your bank or building society you are entitled to a full and immediate refund of the amount paid from your bank or building society. If you receive a refund you are not entitled to, you must pay it back when Sunderland City Council asks you to
- You can cancel a Direct Debit at any time by simply contacting your bank or building society. Written confirmation may be required. Please also notify us.
