Sunderland primary school children benefit from Bikeability cycling sessions

Over 4,100 primary school children across Sunderland will have had the opportunity to learn vital cycling skills this academic year. This is thanks to the continued rollout of Bikeability sessions in 85 schools across the city.

Bikeability

Bikeability (formerly Cycling Proficiency) is a national programme delivered by fully qualified instructors. It offers structured, inclusive cycling training designed to equip children with the confidence and skills they need to ride safely on today's roads.

Regardless of experience or ability, every child taking part will have the chance to learn how to ride or improve their cycling technique in a safe and supportive environment.

Lessons begin in the classroom before building their skills and confidence to be able to cycle safely first on the yard, and then the roads. Bikeability training takes place over four days and available to students in years five and six.

Councillor Beth Jones, Cabinet Member for Communities, Culture and Tourism at Sunderland City Council said: "Bikeability is a fantastic opportunity for children to learn how to cycle safely—an essential life skill that will stay with them forever.

"Cycling offers so many benefits, from improving physical fitness to boosting mental wellbeing. I'd encourage all eligible primary school children to take part and discover the freedom and fun that comes with learning to ride."

Bikeability training supports Sunderland's wider goals around active travel, road safety, and children's health and wellbeing. By encouraging young people to adopt healthier, more sustainable ways of getting around, the programme helps set positive habits for life.

David Robson, Senior Cycle Instructor said: "Bikeability continues to play a vital role in the health and wellbeing of children, giving them a life skill they will never forget. The training also encourages them to view cycling as a healthy, affordable way to commute."

One of the final schools to receive Bikeability training this academic year is Broadway Primary School with over 30 students completing the training.

David Walton, Headteacher at Broadway Primary School said: "Here at Broadway Junior School, we aim to ensure that everyone has every opportunity to thrive both inside and outside of school. We value the outdoors and have great grounds, and opportunities, for children within our school day. However, we recognise that some of our children do not have open spaces or outdoor experiences once they leave us.

"By engaging with Bikeability, our children can join in with their friends outside of school using their bikes whilst being mindful of their safety... and of bike maintenance! We have always had a positive experience with the skilled team who help our children develop key skills within these sessions. It is a great benefit to everyone involved."
