Car parking and Moving Traffic Enforcement

Hourly rates at more than 1,500 spaces will increase by 10p.

The new rates cover more than 1,000 places at the Sunniside and St Mary's multi-storey car parks and nearly 500 places at Broughton, Charles, Gorse, High Street, Nile, Tatham and West Wear street car parks.

The proposals do not apply to the new Riverside multi-storey and its 657 spaces.

There are no changes to business or residents permits and these are the first rate increases for five years.

The Free After 3 scheme is stopping at multi-storey car parks and continues at these surface car parks:

• Gorse Road
• Charles Street
• West Wear Street
• Tatham Street
• Nile Street

The changes were agreed at the Cabinet meeting on Thursday 7 August and are part of a wider review which includes how parking services could be adopting new powers under Part 6 of the Traffic Management Act 2004 (TMA).

Adopting the new powers would allow the City Council to enforce certain types of moving traffic restrictions, for example cycle lanes, yellow box junctions, banned turns and no entries in locations where road users regularly ignore them. Consultation is underway on these changes and residents can complete a short feedback form by visiting Moving Traffic Enforcement..
