New bridge marks milestone on Ryhope Doxford Link Road

The new bridge, completed by Esh Construction, will let pedestrians, cyclists, and equestrian users cross the new link road.

Once complete, Rotary Road will connect Ryhope to the A19, Tunstall and Doxford Park in the west and link Doxford Park to the Southern Radial Route, enhancing access from the City Centre to the A19 in the south.

The NMU bridge is now in place following the final part being installed by a 250-ton crane today (TBC).

Sunderland City Council's Cabinet Member for Dynamic City, Cllr Kevin Johnston, said: "With the completion of this new NMU bridge we see Rotary Road take another step forward. This in turn is an important part of the infrastructure that will support the South Sunderland Growth Area, which will be a big part of our city's future as we increase and broaden our housing stock and offer more residential choices."

Steven Garrigan, Divisional Director at Esh Construction, said: "The scheme continues to progress very well, and we are pleased to mark this key milestone. Since work commenced in January this year, a significant amount of bulk earthworks have been delivered, with 99,362m³ of rock and 48,378m³ of clay excavated and removed from site to pave the way for the new road.

"Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS) have also been constructed, with three retention basins and one retention pond featuring throughout the site to accommodate the highway drainage. We look forward to the official opening early in 2023."
