Weekend road closures
Road users are advised of road closures this weekend as part of the ongoing City Way Widening scheme.
A full road closure will be in place between Monarch Way and Camberwell Way from 8am on Saturday 15 October until 6pm on Sunday 16 October.
As the work nears completion, the closures are necessary to allow the team to complete the final duct crossings and remove the concrete barriers from the area.
Throughout the closures, access to Oak Tree Farm, David Lloyd and Doxford International Business Park will be maintained via a diversion around Silksworth Road and the A690.
Once complete, the project should address the anticipated increase in traffic due to the expansion of housing developments in the South Sunderland Growth Area between Ryhope and Doxford Park.
Sunderland City Council's Portfolio Holder for Dynamic City, Councillor Kevin Johnston, said: "These important works are helping us to develop the necessary infrastructure to support the South Sunderland Growth Area. This a big part of our city's future as we increase and broaden our housing stock and offer more residential choices.
"We would like to thank drivers for their patience as we continue the improvement works on City Way. The scheme has been delayed due to vandalism and damage to ductwork, which has caused further delays for the utility companies. Utility diversions are now largely complete, and we have been making good progress on site over the last few months."
The work is due to be complete later this Autumn.
