Magical History Tour Augmented Reality App comes to Sunderland

An exciting augmented reality app aimed at helping young people find out about their area's historical past is being launched in the North area of Sunderland.

AR App

Funded by the North Area Committee, this interactive app will allow children and families to have their photos taken with historical characters associated with specific locations along the Magical History Tour.

All together there are 17 points of interest across the five wards - Southwick, Castle, St Peter's, Fulwell and Redhill - that make up the trail.

These include legendary smuggler Spottee at Spottee's Cave, Roker, Alice in Wonderland and the White Rabbit at Southwick Green, a knight at Hylton Castle, a cavalier soldier at Downhill Skate Park and a monk at St Peters Church in Monkwearmouth.

Cllr Denny Wilson, Chair of the North Area Committee, said: "The north area of Sunderland is rich in its history and heritage.

"We wanted something that would be a fun way for children and families to find out more about their area's history and heritage as well as encouraging them to spend time together exploring the north area of the city.

"Being able to have your photo taken with some of the historical characters connected with Sunderland's past is a great interactive experience which we hope will appeal to families and children of all ages and backgrounds.

"The app has lots of information about each of the characters and their connection with the North Area making learning about our local community lots of fun and really interactive."

North Sunderland Magical History Tour will be free and available to download from Wednesday 2 June on the Play Store (Android) and App Store (iOS).

Due to some of the characters being situated alongside busy main roads, it is advised that all children participating are accompanied by an adult and extra care is taken along busy routes.
