Honorary Aldermen and Alderwomen
The council can give honorary titles in recognition of distinguished contribution to civic life.
The council has given the title of Honorary Alderman to past members of the council in recognition of their services to the City of Sunderland and Sunderland City Council. The aldermen were all conferred in an extraordinary meeting of the council by the Mayor.
From time to time the Honorary Aldermen attend community engagements on behalf of the Mayor and are part of civic ceremonies such as Remembrance Parade, special flag raising ceremonies, Citizenship ceremonies and more.
Whilst the role of Honorary Aldermen is one of the highest honours that the city can give a person, there are no particular entitlements attached to this role, it does not come with an allowance and the honour cannot be passed on.
